RBHS HOSA makes most of summer break

For most students, school clubs and activities are the last things on their minds during the summer months. The Red Bay HOSA chapter, however, spent time competing in Dallas, Texas, over the summer, showing once again how dedicated the students are to their club and organization.
“Red Bay High School did exceptionally well and brought home numerous awards and accolades,” said HOSA sponsor Dr. Kay Hargett. “I am extremely proud of these students.”
Red Bay competed with students not only from across the United States but also across the globe. Students from France, Italy, England and other countries all made the trip to compete in this event.
While at the competition, Red Bay High School was recognized as Most Outstanding Chapter for the State of Alabama. The RBHS HOSA chapter also won the award at the International Conference, which Dr. Susan Hargett said is a very outstanding award.
RBHS Senior Sydney Hardin won the Barbara James award for outstanding community service, and Hardin also won first place in the HOSA Happenings Newsletter category.
Sarah Williams and Kaylee Markham placed in the top 25 in the international competition against France, England and other foreign countries.
“I was told that Alabama has never placed this high before at an international conference,” said Hargett. “These students did a great job.”
Along with these students, RBHS students Conner Ashley and Brooke Shotts competed in the medical innovation competition, which is one of the most challenging competitions, and Hargett said both students did extremely well.
Hargett was recognized as outstanding HOSA teacher and received a plaque for her leadership and dedication to the students of RBHS and the HOSA organization.
Hargett said HOSA would like to thank the students, faculty, and administrators for their continued support of the students who traveled to Dallas, Texas, for this competition. HOSA would also like to extend a special thanks to the members of the community for their financial support, which made the trip possible.
Students have the opportunity to earn scholarships for college through these healthcare competitions. Hargett encouraged students to participate not only to gain valuable knowledge about healthcare but also to network for college entrance and jobs.
The HOSA competition for next year will take place in Orlando, Fla.
