Tharptown, Vina fall against region opponents

By Bart Moss for the FCT

Two early turnovers and a bevy of penalties snowballed on the Tharptown Wildcats in a 48-0 loss to the Phillips Bears.

Tharptown had two solid drives disrupted in the first quarter by fumbles deep in Phillips territory, one of which led to an early Bears touchdown. Phillips just led the Wildcats 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Several holding and pass interference calls led to the spigot being opened in the second quarter as the Bears scored four more unanswered touchdowns to take a 28-0 halftime lead.

Tharptown was only able to amass 152 total yards of offense. Carson Petree accounted for the bulk of the offensive numbers with 97 yards on 11 carries.

Quarterback Ken Edwards led the Bears, completing seven of nine passes for 139 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. The interception was off a tipped ball grabbed out of the air by Tharptown freshman Dominic Baker.

Former Tharptown football coach David Hogan serves as a volunteer coach at Phillips as the offensive coordinator.

Tharptown falls to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in region play. The Wildcats will travel to Cherokee Friday night.

Vina falls to Shoals Christian, 60-58
