Keep summer safe
For many of us, the true “most wonderful time of the year” has arrived. Sure, the official first day of summer isn’t until June 21 according to the calendar – but it’s so close we can taste it. School’s out, the weather has warmed up, and it’s time for a few of our favorite things – flip flops and ice cream cones and pool parties and all the other hallmarks that define the next three or four months.
Can we make one request? Wherever you go and whatever you do this summer, let’s keep it safe.
Despite being a time of fun and relaxation for many, summer also brings a set of perils that demand caution. We’re not trying to get melodramatic here – we just want to point out that you can ensure your fun in the sun by taking just a few precautions.
Going to be in the water, maybe at Red Bay Fun Park or the Russellville City Pool? Make sure your kiddos know how to swim. It’s a basic life skill. Also ensure they follow any posted rules or common sense guidelines that come into play when spending a day at the pool or on Cedar Creek.
Mitigate the threats posed by that hot sunshine, too. We can’t say enough about sunscreen, sunglasses and other protective measures, like hats, light colored clothing and proper hydration. Whether you’re headed to the Phil Campbell Splash Pad or Hodges’ equestrian park, sun protection is key.
We also ask you to stay weather aware this summer. A sweet summer afternoon at City Lake Park or the Dismals can turn sour in a moment. Keep an eye on the weather forecast as you head out each day and plan for whatever might crop up.
Grilling out? Prevent fire hazards by following all grilling safety tips. Going for a family bike ride? Don’t forget the helmets. Staying out late into the evening to catch fireflies? Let us be the first to recommend mosquito repellant measures. Hitting the road for faraway destinations? You know the drill – snap on the seatbelts and keep your eyes on the road.
The last thing we want to do is drain the fun out of summer by imposing all kinds of rules; nevertheless, we’ll add our voice to the chorus encouraging people to take just a few simple steps to keep summer safe.
