Local women, city council take on Ovarian/Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month

teal

The council adopted a resolution in August recognizing September as Ovarian/Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month, and last Tuesday the council made good on that agreement by helping Mary Ann Clement and Robin Drake to hang teal ribbons and place a sign at city hall. Known as the silent killer, ovarian cancer affects 22,000 women a year in the United States – 14,000 of whom die from it. Clement is a survivor, and Drake is currently fighting ovarian cancer. Drake and Clement are leading the campaign for teal, backed by Lilies of the Valley support group. (1) Councilmen Jamie Harris and David Palmer and Mayor David Grissom hang a teal ribbon on a lamppost at city hall. (2) (Left to right) Councilmen Lanny Hubbard, Harris, William Nale and Palmer, with Grissom, Councilman Gary Cummings and Relay for Life community manager Anna Duncan join Clement and Drake to light up a sign for awareness.
