Woman charged with trying to kill husband

During the September grand jury session, jurors indicted a Phil Campbell woman accused of trying to kill her husband of 17 years.

Mandy Arleen Romero, 35, 1559 Nix Road, Phil Campbell, was indicted for attempted murder in the shooting of 38-year-old Randy Don Yocum, District Attorney Joey Rushing said.

According to Rushing, the indictment stems from evidence collected during a three-week investigation by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office following a call officers received on March 12 of an accidental shooting at Romero and Yocum’s Nix Road residence.

Officers at the scene reported Yocum had been shot through the head but Romero reportedly told officers Yocum was cleaning his gun when it went off and shot him.

Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said during the investigation, medical personnel at Huntsville Hospital, where Yocum was transferred after slipping into a coma, said when he woke up from the coma, he allegedly told nurses his wife was the one who shot him.

Oliver said at the time of Romero’s arrest that there was sufficient evidence to charge her with attempted murder.

Rushing said Romero’s case will be placed on the arraignment docket for Oct. 25 and will be on the criminal trial docket in December.
