Calloway named 5A Back of the Year

During his three seasons at Russellville, Brent Calloway has given fans many memorable moments.

He has scored 81 career touchdowns, rushed for 4,894 career yards and helped the Golden Tigers reach the state championship in 2008 and 2009.

Now the rewards are rolling in for Calloway.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association selected Calloway as the 2010 Class 5A Back of the Year.

“For me it’s a great honor,” Calloway said. “A great one to go along with the others I have received.”

Calloway was selected from four finalists. The other three finalists were Danny Woodson of LeFlore, Jameis Winston of Hueytown and Kyle Crabtree of Fort Payne.

Earlier this season he was named to the rosters for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic — where he led the Alabama squad with nine tackles while playing as a linebacker — and the 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, where he will also compete as a linebacker.

Calloway said he was pleased with almost everything he accomplished on the field this season, but he was not able to reach his ultimate goal — a state championship.

“I had a great season. I broke records. I set my career high in rushing and touchdowns,” Calloway said. “I did great, but it doesn’t mean nothing without the blue map.”

Calloway is currently playing basketball for the Golden Tigers, but will travel to San Antonio in January to play in the Army All-American Bowl.

He has received several offers from colleges across the nation, but he said he is still a solid verbal commitment to Alabama.
