RHS dominates on its way to tourney finals

FLORENCE — For the third time in the last four years Russellville has cruised to an appearance in the finals of the Times Daily Classic with an 81-60 victory against Shoals Christian.

The Golden Tigers opened up a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Flame pulled within five points midway through the second quarter before Russellville pulled away for the win.

“They were scrappy,” Russellville coach Michael Smith said. “They kept the game close.”

The Golden Tigers had four players reach double-digit scoring, led by Will Bostick with 20 points. A.J. Elliot added 19 points, Darrian Graham scored 16 and Travis Daniels scored 13 points.

Smith said he is pleased with the way his team is spreading the scoring around.

“That’s a big plus for this team,” Smith said. “It’s hard for opponents to key on one person. It helps us get a more balanced floor attack.”

Russellville has looked strong in the tournament, posting an 87-45 win against Phil Campbell and a 55-38 win against Sheffield before playing Shoals Christian.

By knocking off the Flame, Russellville earned a spot in the finals against Florence. That game was played Tuesday night, but concluded too late to be included in today’s paper.
