Red Bay Lions Club hosting clothing drive

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Red Bay City Council, Red Bay Lions Club President Ace Howe invited the council members and the community to the Lions Club annual clothing distribution on Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. until noon.

The distribution for boys clothing will take place at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and the distribution for girls clothing will take place at the Crutchfield Center.

“This event is something that we enjoy doing every year,” Howe said. “It is a way for us to give back to the community, which is what our organization is all about.” 

Red Bay Mayor Bobby Forsythe thanked the Lions Club for the support they have given the community over the years.

“When I was still involved with the school, I was able to personally see how this clothing drive helps children during the holidays,” Forsythe said. “Being able to receive something nice during this time of year is such a blessing to these children and you could really see that on each of their faces.”

In other business, the Red Bay City Council addressed the following issues:

• The council approved a roadblock for the month of December to support medical expenses for the family of John Austin Dobbs of Hamilton.

• The new fire truck should be delivered to the fire station by no later than the first of next week.

• The council approved Resolution 10-11-15 A for the City of Red Bay to hold in reserve $25,410.00 for the purpose of matching the Land and Water Conservation funding for the development of the Red Bay Heritage Park as a passive urban green space in the downtown commercial district.

• The council approved Resolution 10-11-15 B authorizing the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG) to provide administrative services for the Heritage Park project and grant. The council further approved Mayor Bobby Forsythe to sign the agreement between the city and NACOLG.

• The council approved Resolution 10-11-15 C authorizing Mayor Bobby Forsythe to dispose of the surplus property that is not needed for public or municipal purposes by the City of Red Bay. The disposal of the property will be by public auction, sealed bid or negotiated sale with proceeds being deposited into the Red Bay City general fund.

• The council approved payroll changes for Street and Sanitation employees to be paid $50.00 per day on call pay for a weekend day or holiday and be paid a minimum of two hours for each call out that lasts under two hours. During the week, employees will receive a minimum of two hours pay for each call out that lasts under tow hours.

• The council approved that, concerning personal time, city employees will now be allowed to take half days instead of only whole days.

• The alley between 1st Street S.E. and 2nd Street S.W. will be closed until further notice.

• Brooks Davis was appointed to the Red Bay Water and Gas Board for a six-year term expiring Nov. 6, 2016.

• Peggy Cox was appointed to the Senior Citizen Board for a term expiring Oct. 1, 2013.

• Sandy George was appointed as a supernumerary member of the Senior Citizen Board.

• The next Red Bay Council meeting will be at 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, due to the Christmas Parade.

• Red Bay City Hall and all city services will be closed Nov. 25 and 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Thursday garbage route will run on Wednesday and the Friday garbage route will run the following Monday.
