RHS seeking perfect region record

With the Class 5A, Region 8 title secured, there is little for Russellville to play for this Friday as the Golden Tigers host Columbia.

A win by the Golden Tigers would give the program its first season without a region loss since 2006.

Russellville coach Doug Goodwin said it would not be an easy game because Columbia has several talented athletes.

“They gave Muscle Shoals all they wanted,” Goodwin said. “They are capable of giving us all that we want.”

The Eagles feature a good defensive front that can dominate games. Goodwin said the defensive end runs well and can cause problems for opposing offenses while the remaining defensive linemen can shed blocks and disrupt plays. Columbia is allowing an average of 18.8 points per game and has shutout two opponents while limiting another to six points.

On offense Columbia uses several formations to confuse defenses, but the player to watch is the running back.

“If he gets loose, he can take it the distance,” Goodwin said.

He was not happy with the performance of his team last week and looks for improvement as the playoffs approach.

“Hopefully we can get to the point where who we’re playing and the consequences of the game won’t determine how we play,” Goodwin said. “We need to just show up and play.”
