Standout Memories from 2010

Usually the things I report on during the week give me ideas for my column. This week I’ve been going through back issues of the Franklin County Times to compile stores for the Year in Review and it made me think of the events that took place in my own personal life in 2010 that were memorable to me.

Our First Dog

David and I decided in April that we would venture into the world of being dog owners. I’ve always wanted a Yorkie, so that was the dog we ended up getting. We named him Miles Davis and loved playing with him and holding him while we watched TV in the evenings. He was a very sweet puppy but we soon realized we were definitely not cut out to be inside pet owners.

Because of our schedules, we didn’t have enough time to devote to training him or playing with him during the day – a big no-no if you want to have a manageable pet. After many tears, we finally decided it would be best to give him to someone who could care for him better, which is what we did. We miss him from time to time but we’re glad we figured out that small/inside dog ownership was not for us. The next dog we get will probably be a Great Dane that lives outside.

Adventures

David and I took several small trips this year, mostly to see concerts because we love music. We saw several bands perform, but my absolute, without-a-doubt favorite was watching my all-time favorite band, Muse, perform in Nashville in March. I was completely enthralled the entire time we were there and it’s something I’ll remember forever.

Milestones

In July, my mom celebrated her 50th birthday. She will probably kill me for writing that for the whole county to read but honestly, she doesn’t look like she’s 50 at all so maybe that will make up for it. We had a surprise party for her (against her explicit wishes) but she ended up saying that she had one of the best times celebrating with her friends and family.

In August, one of my best friends, Jamie Lane, had her first baby. When she first told me that she was going to be a mommy, I couldn’t process it. It just didn’t seem real (and still doesn’t from time to time). But Jamie has always been very responsible and motherly and it shows: Aleya is the sweetest little girl you’ve ever seen and “Aunt Kellie” can’t go visit her enough.

In September, I started my job here at the FCT. As I wrote in my first column, this was a big decision for me because I was about to take a leap of faith and finally enter into a career that I went to college for four years to prepare for. So far, it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I love what I do and the people I work with and I can’t imagine doing anything other than writing for a living. I just hope it shows in my writing each week.

Celebrations

In October, David and I celebrated our one year anniversary. We couldn’t believe that it had been an entire year since we had searched for florists and caterers, labored over a photographer, and planned every other little minute detail that almost drove me nuts before we eventually tied the knot on October 24. We had a wonderful first year that makes me look forward to the many more God-given years we will spend together.

There were so many other memories from 2010 that I could write about that could probably fill this entire paper (but would probably make you bored to tears). These were just a few highlights that stood out to me. As 2011 approaches, I am thanking God for a wonderful 2010 and praying 2011 is just as fun and exciting.

Wishing you a Happy New Year.
