Tiffin still in business despite plant layoffs

RED BAY – The economy has taken a toll on locally owned Tiffin Motorhomes, but even though the plant has had layoffs, company officials say the business is still going strong.
General manager Tim Tiffin said the plant has been affected by the troubled economy and the lay-offs are just a reflection of that and not an indication that the business is going under.
"We have had to adjust our labor force to reflect current market conditions," Tiffin said.
Sources indicate the plant has had three separate lay-offs this season. Tiffin did not indicate whether or not this is true, and did not release an exact number of employees laid off.
However, Tiffin said they do not expect there to be any more layoffs.
Tiffin said the company's current production has been slashed 40 percent from last year, but that doesn't mean the company is going anywhere.
"We've been here for 36 years, and we plan to be here another 36 years," Tiffin said.
Tiffin Motorhomes is the manufacturer of Allegro, Allegro Bay, Phaeton, Allegro Bus, and Zephyr, and has reported to have employed around 2,000 people.
