Summer food program in county

By Staff
Melissa Cason
Three Franklin County school cafeterias will offer free breakfast and lunch to anyone under the age of 18 this summer.
Franklin County schools Child Nutrition Program Director Carol Humphres said the program is funded through a grant from the federal government.
"They believe that children should eat a balanced meal in the summer months as well as during the school months," Humphres said.
The free meals will be offered at Phil Campbell, Belgreen and Red Bay schools.
"With summer school at Belgreen, we'll easily serve 180 meals per day this summer," Humphres said.
"We are hoping that we have a good turnout this year," she said. "We are reimbursed from the federal government based on how many meals are served each day."
Humphres said that taking advantage of this program can help families cut the cost of feeding their families during the summer.
