RHS tennis opens strong at state
MONTGOMERY – The Russellville boys tennis team posted a strong showing Monday in the opening round of the Class 5A state tournament with a third-place score of 32 to trail UMS-Wright and Walker, who each have 42 points to share first place.
T.J. Drake, Carson Hutchins, Anthony Turner, Tyler Malone and John Tyler Hardin and two of the Golden Tigers' three doubles teams all advanced to the semifinals.
Red Bay tennis in fourth place
MOBILE – The Red Bay boys tennis team scored 24 points Monday to trail Montgomery Academy and Randolph, who each had 36 to lead the nine-team Class 1A-3A state tournament.
No. 2 Matt Young, No. 3 Toby Gray and No. 6 Kirk Armstrong each advanced to Tuesday's state championship matches in singles play. Young beat Indian Springs' Jonathan Shieh 6-4, 6-2, Gray dropped Bayside Academy's Emory Jones 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 and Armstrong defeated Donoho's Abhi Purohit 6-3, 7-5.
The No. 1 doubles team of Wesley Jarnigan-Young fell to Randolph's Alex Rafiee-Anthony Lioce 6-1, 6-2, while No. 2 Gray-Armstrong lost 6-3, 6-4 to Randolph's Huw Smith-Max Huehne in the semis.

THS bean supper fundraiser
May 5
The Tharptown varsity softball program will hold a bean supper fundraiser Monday, May 5 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the school's softball field.
BASS regional tournament
May 22-23
DECATUR – The BASS Club World Championship (BCWC) Regional Tournament, a qualifier for the World Championship, will be held Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23.
Ten regional tournaments are held throughout the year with winners from each advancing to the BASS Club World Championship, which is set for Oct. 6-11. For more information on the BCWC tournaments, visit www.bassmaster.com.
