LITTLEVILLE – The Russellville boys golf team hit the links for the first time this season and came away with a easy victory Monday at Twin Pines Country Club.
The RHS Black squad has an abundance of experience this year with four seniors and one junior on the top five and that experience made all the difference as first-year coach Butch Harkness' Golden Tigers romped to an easy win.
Led by senior John Seal with a 2-under-par 33, the RHS Black squad shot 146 to easily pull away from the other four schools in the match.
Deshler's leading scorer was Chance Coates with 47 and John Michael Russell shot the lowest score for Covenant Christian at 46. Kaigle Lawson led Colbert County with 43 and B J Mayfield posted the lowest round of the day for Colbert Heights with a 50.
Seal was not the only Golden Tiger to have a good day as three different golfers shot in the 30s and a total of eight golfers posted a score of 43 or better on the opening round of the season. To round out the scoring for the Black squad, senior TJ Seagraves shot par at 35 and senior Brian Brown was two over at 37. Senior EJ Fisher scored 41 and junior Bret Fish finished out the scoring for the Black squad with a 43.
The RHS Gold team was led by seventh grader Will Bragwell and junior Trea Mosley at 41. Close behind was eighth grader Ty Trapp with 43, while sophomores Alex Pounders and Taylor Reeps kept it close with scores of 46 for the Gold team. Playing as individuals, sophomore Nick Ross shot a 50 and senior Cody Bragwell posted a 53.
Seal said that the team was glad to get on the course and get the first match behind them.
"We hope to have a lot of fun this year, and we have been working really hard getting ready for the season," Seal said. "For a lot of us, it's our last season to compete as a Golden Tiger and that make this opening win really sweet."
