Red Bay to host baseball clinic

RED BAY – Four years ago Red Bay baseball coach Greg Cash found a convenient way to convince his players to attend winter baseball camp.
Instead of expecting players to travel to camps, Cash decided to start his own baseball clinic.
"I started this camp because I wanted my players to go to Christmas camps, and the other ones are father away and more expensive. I knew all of our players wouldn't attend those camps," said Cash, who has coached at Red Bay for eight years.
The fourth annual Red Bay High School baseball camp will be held Thursday, Dec. 20 through Saturday, Dec. 22.
The hitting clinic held Thursday and Friday will include primary instruction from Northeast Mississippi assistant coach and hitting instructor Richie Harrellson, a former major leaguer and a coach and All-SEC player at Ole Miss.
Past hitting instructors have included Florida Marlins slugger Josh Willingham, an All-American at North Alabama, and Ole Miss hitting coach Heath Thorn.
"I have tried to bring a good coach to our gym and make it economical for our players, and they've always gotten a lot of swings at this camp," said Cash. "We've averaged about 40 participants all three years, and it's definitely helped us during spring."
With a minimum of 10 players, the pitching clinc will be held Saturday.
He said parents are welcome to attend the camp because they can learn how to conduct drills.
"Parents are welcome to participate in drills – I call it father participation," Cash said. "I tell my younger kids' fathers they can come and watch so they can learn about the drills."
Camp registration is $40 per player (grades 1-12). For more information, contact Cash at 668-3557.
