FROG POND – The Frog Pond Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating a new addition to their department: A new fire truck donated by a New York fire department.
Fire Chief Carl Pierce said the new truck was donated to the department by the Putnam Lake Fire Department from New York.
"We learned about the truck from Harlon Hutchinson, our representative from NAFECO," Pierce said.
Hutchinson knew that the Putnam Lake Fire Department was looking for a new home for one of their older trucks, and Pierce then contacted Greg McGee, a firefighter from Putnam Lake, about it.
"I talked to him a couple of times," Pierce said. "Before we knew it, we had a fire truck."
He added that McGee had a few obstacles as he prepared to have the truck sent to Alabama.
"They didn't have a ramp big enough for it so they had to make one big enough to have it loaded for hauling," Pierce said.
The Frog Pond VFD received the truck last week, and it became an instant upgrade.
"This is better than anything we have," Pierce said. "The truck is ready to go without any work needed."
The truck has a 1,000-gallon water capacity, and can pump up to 1,250 gallons per minute. It has a diesel engine and an automatic transmission.
"We would like to send out a special thank you to Harlon Hutchinson and Greg McGee for all they did in getting this truck to us," Pierce said.
The new fire truck is not the only thing getting the fire department excited. They are getting ready for their pancake breakfast fundraiser later this month.
Pierce said that the fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Frog Pond Community Center. Plates are $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Everyone is invited to come have breakfast with the Frog Pond Volunteer Fire Department.
