Back to school basics

I can hardly believe school is about to start in a few weeks. It seems like summer just began. My family and I didn't get to do half of what we wanted before the school starts, mainly because I have a broken foot.
So now I find the days drawing closer to the first day of school, and we are hardly ready. We have a first-grader and a preschooler to get ready, and time is running out.
We have to buy clothes, book bags, shoes and other school supplies with only a few weeks to go before the first bell rings.
It seems that back-to-school has become more hectic as the years have passed. I remember going shopping with my mom to buy clothes and supplies, but I don't remember having to have so much for the classroom, and with each passing year the lists get longer.
Today's kids have to learn so much in order to be effective; they need supplies, which can become quite costly, especially if there is more than one child in the family.
That's why the Franklin County Times is sponsoring the School House Stock drive. The following items are needed: backpacks, ruled filler paper (both wide and college ruled), pocket folders, black and blue pens, No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, pencil boxes, crayons, colored markers, highlighters, white glue, glue sticks, scissors for all ages, erasers, and rulers.
It is my hope that everyone will support this drive, if they can, so that every child can have the same opportunity to have essentials to learn and to grow.
So before you finish your school supply list, reach for a few extra items and take them to the boxes at participating locations, and thank you for doing your part.
