Goodwin, RHS wrap spring practice

First-year Russellville coach Doug Goodwin knows what to expect.
After eight years at Demopolis, he understands Golden Tigers fans want a state title.
"We averaged about 10 wins for eight years at Demopolis, just like they have had here," Goodwin said after Friday's intrasquad jamboree game.
"People in Demopolis expected to win, just like people here expect to win.
"But more importantly, we as a coaching staff expect to win. We would like to win every game, every year. Even though we know that's not possible, that's still our goal."
Senior quarterback Cory Trapp, who threw for 2,500 yards and 29 touchdowns last season, only practiced three days because of Russellville's deep run in the baseball playoffs but has adjusted quickly to Goodwin's offense and coaching philosophy.
"He really works on attitude, and he really stresses having a good attitude," Trapp said. "When you mess up, he's out there encouraging you."
Goodwin said he doesn't have a depth chart set, but he likes what he's seen so far with Trapp.
"He's mobile, and he's got a good touch on the ball," Goodwin said. "He's running an offense he's never run before, and he learned it in three days and didn't make a whole lot of mistakes tonight. I think his future is bright next fall."
Also returning in the backfield is Mike Abernathy, a four-year starter at running back.
"I think he's got a chance to be really special," Goodwin said. "I thought all the players had really good attitudes, and they were very open to learning a new system.
"We saw we have some talent, and we just need to just finish installing everything and get to work in the weight room over the summer and get in great shape."
