New jail named after Mike Green

By Staff

Up until Monday morning it was just going to be called the new Franklin County Jail, but now it's been given a proper name.
The Franklin County Commission voted Monday morning, at the request of Sheriff Larry Plott, to name the new facility the Franklin County Mike Green Center, after the county's late probate judge.
"For over 15 years we've been trying to get a facility built before a federal judge intervened," Plott said. "It was while Mike Green was probate judge that it was built and will eventually be completed."
Plott said it was important for Green and the commissioners to get behind the jail when they did, adding that if the government had to intervene, the county would have little say so in the jail's construction and operation.
"We're only asking for 20 people," Plott said. "They could come in here and put 35, maybe 45 people to work and it's the county's burden to pay for it year after year. We don't have that kind of money."
Plott also extended his tanks to the county commissioners for thier efforts in building the new jail.
