New veterans carry the torch

By Staff
Jason Cannon, Franklin County Times
Russellville's Veterans of Foreign Wars lodge elected new officers during their monthly meeting last week, and are recruiting new members to breathe new life into the organization.
VFW Clubs are vital to a successful community. They are an outreach organization, putting funds and services back into the community that they have served so faithfully.
In the years after World War II, clubs like the VFW and American Legion were booming with members.
However, those members have begun to age and cannot take the active roles they once did with the organization.
Generations after these men, Patriotism doesn't run as freely and richly as it did in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
Thus, membership in these clubs has decreased. Until recently veterans of the first Iraqi conflict and other modern era skirmishes haven't seen the need to pick up where their forefathers and grandfathers have left off.
Our most hearty thanks to the new officers of our local VFW, Bill Jackson, Barry Moore, Danny Carter, Hugh Plott, William Beard, Harold Herring and Troy Oliver.
Their efforts and organization will lead this great great club for many years to come and bring it back to the level of prominence the VFW had in its early years.
Those of you who have served this county, we encourage you to join the organization with your brothers and share your stories. For more information on how to join the VFW, contact Quarter Master Barry Moore at 331-9895.
