Confederate Memorial about heritage

This afternoon, the Sons of the Confederacy, John W. Harris, Jr. Camp 1883 will host a Confederate memorial service today at 2 p.m. at the Franklin County Courthouse.
Camp Commander Bobby Stanford said the event would consist of a prayer service, a pledge to the Confederate Flag, songs and a wreath laying ceremony at the monument at the courthouse.
While the word "Confederate" is used to define many things, today's event is about Southern heritage.
It's popular these days to lump Confederate remembrance with racism, slavery, the Ku Klux Clan and other negative things.
These things have rallied themselves behind the symbol of the Confederate flag, yet they do not represent the ideals of the Confederacy.
The Civil War, the Confederacy, the Confederate Flag and all other things associated with it are all apart of our history.
As Alabamians, it's a rich part of our history. It makes us unique.
The Confederate flag is a symbol of our heritage and our history. It's not the symbol of ignorance so many hate groups would have us believe.
So, after church Sunday, we encourage you to stop by the courthouse and hear a little about our history. Because from history we learn how we can affect the future.
