VINA – Mother Nature dealt the 2007 County Softball tournament fits but in the end Phil Campbell took out Red Bay 4-0 to win the county title.
At first it was set for Saturday, then moved up to Friday due to the threat of foul weather.
It was delayed Friday night due to lightning but finally got back on track on a bright and crisp Monday afternoon.
And while the day may have been new, the two schools that squared off for the title were two familiar foes.
The championship game came down to the same two teams in last year's tournament, which Red Bay won 3-1.
This year would be a little different.
After the first inning, the Bobcats (23-6, 3-0) proved just how badly they wanted to take that championship trophy away from the Tigers by posting two unanswered runs by Erica Halcomb and Shelly Cooper.
The Bobcats cemented their victory by scoring two more unanswered runs by Shayla Pace – one at the top of the second and one at the top of the fourth inning.
Red Bay tried unsuccessfully to mount a comeback for the next three innings, and at the end of the seventh, they were forced to surrender their trophy and title to the Bobcats.
Melissa Russell was the winning pitcher.
Phil Campbell will close out their week with two area games against Mars Hill and Cherokee.
