Red Bay honors Golden, Miss. chief

RED BAY – The Red Bay Police Department is mourning the death of a dear friend and a fellow brother in arms after Golden (Miss.) Police Chief passed away last weekend.
Sammy South, 48, of Golden, Miss. died of health related issues, but he will always be remembered as a man of great character, and as someone who waged war on criminal activity, Red Bay Police Chief Pat Creel said.
"He was always willing to help us, and we often returned the favor," Creel said.
South was instrumental in many Red Bay cases including a case where $750,000 worth of equipment was stolen from a Red Bay business, Creel said.
"Sammy worked with our own Lt. Eddie Chandler in the case which led to numerous arrests," Red Bay Police Sgt. Scottie Belue said.
Belue was a personal friend to South. He said that South would want his fellow police officers to continue the fight against drugs and crime in the communities.
"Sammy helped us make a lot of drug cases," Belue said.
Dispatcher Rita Page remembers South as a friendly, optimistic person.
"Sammy was always laughing and always jolly," Page said.
South was laid to rest Tuesday. The Red Bay Police Department as a whole attended his funeral. As for the best way to honor their friend and colleague, Belue feels that continuing to fight the good fight is what South would have wanted.
"He was all about catching the bad guy…and by continuing that fight, we honor him daily," Belue concluded.
