Life is full of little surprises

Life is full of new experiences, and I sure have experienced several new things since starting here at the paper a little over a month ago.
This past week has definitely been a new experience for me, as I have suddenly stepped into the world of sports writing, something I knew absolutely nothing about.
Never have I ever felt more clueless or out of my element, but somehow I find myself enjoying it, much to my surprise.
Just last week, I attended the first softball and baseball games I had ever been to. I really didn't know what to expect, but the longer I sat there, camera poised and pen scribbling furiously, the more I enjoyed it.
I was amazed at just how talented and dedicated our area high school athletes are.
I inadvertently witnessed a piece of history Tuesday as I witnessed a pummeling of the Athens Golden Eagles by the Russellville Golden Tigers varsity baseball team.
With the win, Russellville earned their first play-off berth in many years.
With wins over rival Muscle Shoals next week, Russellville can not only guarantee that they will win the area championship, they will also earn the rights to host the first game of the play-offs.
I came back from those games with a camera full of pictures (only a few of which were of the fence) and a new appreciation for sports. Who knew that a self-proclaimed band geek like me could actually enjoy any sport that wasn't football?
