RMS art student honored

RMS student Carmen Torres received an honorable mention for her watercolor entry in the annual State Superintendent Visual Arts Contest in Montgomery.
Torres, an 8th grader and a student in Nancy Meeks' Art 2 class was chosen as one of five participants honored in the traditional media division for students in 7th and 8th grade.
The contest was open to K-12TH grade students statewide, and over 200 entries were received. The winners were announced in February.
The win came as a shock to Torres, "I've always loved to draw, but I was really surprised when I found out that I won" Torres said, "I didn't think that I would win, but I did."
Torres' work was displayed alongside the artwork of 200 other students from around the state in the old Supreme Court Library at the state capitol from February 7 until February 22. The works were judged based on originality, technical skill, expression, and composition with awards going to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and two honorable mentions in each category.
The two entry categories for the competition included Category I, which included two dimensional drawings or paintings of any kind, and Category II, which included photography and computer-generated work. Each school system is only allowed to select 15 students to participate in the annual show.
Following the exhibit opening, the student artists, their teachers, and their parents were honored at an awards luncheon.
"It was really neat to see artwork from students all over the state." said Meeks. "I'm really proud of Carmen."
