Nelson quits water and gas board

At Monday night's city council meeting, Red Bay Council Member Bobby Nelson offered to resign from the city's Water and Gas Board. His resignation was accepted by the council.
Nelson's resignation ended a lengthy episode that involved Red Bay City Attorney Brian Hamilton contacting the Alabama Attorney General's office for an opinion on the matter.
Hamilton told council members on March 20 the opinion indicated that city council members are not eligible to serve on the city's Water and Gas Board.
For Nelson to have remained in the position, the board's articles of incorporation would have had to have been amended.
Three current council members, Nelson, Ann Wilkins and Mayor Jeff Reid, served on the board. Wilkins and Reid both previously resigned from the board.
In other news, Council Member Pat Hammock praised the hard work of the cemetery board. Wilkins asked when the 2004-2005 audit would be presented, and learned from Reid that it would be at the next council meeting.
Council Member Ricky Holland raised the issue of maintenance at the Little League field.
