Bobcats fall to Winfield

WINFIELD - It took nearly three quarters, but the Winfield Pirates finally got things going in their home gym on Monday.
The Pirates made seven of their 10 three-pointers on the night in a five-minute flurry midway through the second half, turning a close game with Phil Campbell into a 70-36 rout at the Winfield Christmas Tournament.
The Bobcats (6-5) trailed just 32-26 after a basket and two free throws by Matthew Thomas early in the third quarter.
Winfield then caught fire from the perimeter, hitting four three-pointers in an 18-3 run to close the quarter.
Ryan Tucker drained three consecutive treys over the final two minutes as the Pirates' lead swelled to 50-29 heading to the fourth.
Winfield made three more treys, including two by Adam Franks, in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as the lead grew to 30 points.
Tucker finished with five threes and 17 points. Franks and Ty Seals each added 10.
Eric Glasgow led the Bobcats with nine points, and Randy Cochran added seven.
In other action at the Winfield Christmas Tournament on Monday:
Girls
Phil Campbell 37 Winfield 26
Alana Smith and Erin Gilbert each had nine points as the Lady Bobcats bounced back from a loss to Sparkman earlier in the day.
Tanna Benford added seven points for Phil Campbell (7-6). Jodi Taff had six.
Phil Campbell led 12-5 after one quarter, but Winfield rallied to tie the game 18-18 at halftime.
The Lady Bobcats broke it open by out-scoring Winfield 13-5 in the third quarter.
Kelsie Fair led the Lady Pirates with 11 points.
Phil Campbell was scheduled to face Russellville in the round robin tournament on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

The Class 6A Lady Senators took control early, out-scoring Phil Campbell 19-8 in the first quarter.
Tanna Benford led Phil Campbell with 15 points on five three-pointers.
Katie Jackson added eight points for the Lady Bobcats, and Jodi Taff and Erin Gilbert each had six.
Chanta Ragan and Shai Wilkins each had 14 points to lead Sparkman, and Monica Maxwell added 10.
