Our View – Football season's not over yet…

By Staff
We've editorialized quite a bit in this space on Fridays this year about high school football.
Well, we're not done yet.
That's because the Russellville Golden Tigers aren't done yet.
After an opening season loss to the Deshler Tigers, you would have been hard-pressed to find a large number of Golden Tiger fans — and the coaching staff might have been worried, also — that would have been bold enough to predict at that moment that the team would return to the Super Six state championship game for the third straight year.
But as of tonight, the team is one step away, one win away from doing just that. Only the Athens Golden Eagles, a team Russellville defeated in the regular season, stands in the way.
Win or lose tonight, the Russellville team has come a long way. They have improved week-to-week, as good teams do, and the Golden Tigers are now on an impressive winning streak. These wins don't just happen. They are born in the off-season, through the weight-lifting programs and conditioning work. They grow in fall camp, during the hot August drills and seemingly endless practices with no game in sight.
Our heartiest congratulations go out to our local football teams, coaches, players, cheerleaders, band members and all who have a part in Friday night action.
The Red Bay Tigers ended their season two weeks earlier than they wanted to, but they still deserve a pat on the back for another great season.
Russellville is still marching on, and we wouldn't bet against them to win the Class 5A state championship this season. But win or lose, they've accomplished a lot this season, and as their hometown newspaper, we're proud of them. Please see our weekly salute page for pictures of some of this year's team members, band members and cheerleaders. Best of luck to the coaches and players tonight.
