West Alabama comes up short

MAGNOLIA, Ark. The University of West Alabama football team fell 27-22 to Southern Arkansas (4-5, 2-5) on Saturday despite a late comeback by the Tigers, who trailed 21-0 in the third quarter against the Muleriders.
The Muleriders scored first on a 16-yard run by Torrence Jones with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter. Southern Arkansas would add a 12-yard pass from Damian Melancon to Edwin Skipper with 5:53 left in the second quarter. West Alabama was unable to put up any first half points as the Muleriders held a 14-0 advantage.
SAU went up 21-0 early in the third quarter on another touchdown pass from Melancon, this time to Steven Ashley from 33 yards out. Marcus Ross put UWA on the scoreboard with a three-yard touchdown run with 6:50 left in the third quarter, following a fumble recovery by Randall Jones.
Melancon then threw his third touchdown pass of the game, connecting with Johnny Fields for a 33-yard score with 4:09 remaining in the third quarter to put SAU up 27-7 as the extra-point attempt was no good.
West Alabama moves to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in GSC play on the season.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they host Henderson State with the kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
