ELLISVILLE With leading rusher Voncarie Owens banged up and unable to play, the Jones Junior College Bobcats turned to 5-foot-6, 165-pound Harold Hadley.
The move was a good one as the sophomore rushed for 132 yards on 30 carries as the Bobcats defeated the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves 30-19 here to cap off homecoming festivities Saturday afternoon at Sim Cooley Field at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats improve to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the South Division with the victory. The Wolves, losers of seven straight, fall to 1-7 overall, 0-5 in the division.
Jones also took advantage of the hot hand of quarterback Brett Hyatt, who completed his first seven passes on the breezy afternoon. Hyatt finished the
day 15-of-19 for 184 yards and three touchdowns, all to Milton Collins.
Co-Lin hurt its own cause by losing three fumbles and throwing three interceptions. The Wesson visitors dented the scoreboard first. On its second possession of the game, Co-Lin went 56 yards in seven plays. Julius Roberson, who rushed 26 times for 160 yards on the day, scored on a 9-yard draw play. Chris Blackwell's extra point made it 7-0 with 4:30 left in the first quarter.
But Jones responded on the next drive. The Bobcats drove 72 yards in seven plays. Hyatt capped the march with a 42-yard post pattern to Collins for the score. Collins would end the game with 103 yards on seven receptions. The extra point attempt was blocked and the Wolves were up 7-6 with 1:31 left in
the first quarter.
The Bobcats took the lead for good on their next possession, moving 45 yards in five plays. Hadley took an option pitch from Hyatt around the right side 12 yards for the touchdown. Hyatt then connected with Michael Johnson on a pass over the middle for the two-point conversion and Jones led 14-7 with 12:21 left in the first half.
The Bobcats went up 21-7 with 1:56 left in the first half when Hyatt connected with Collins on a 39-yard scoring pass down the middle.
Ben Beasley booted a 32-yard field goal with 7:51 left in the third quarter to make it 24-7 in favor of JCJC.
After Co-Lin scored on a 73-yard fumble return by Johnson, Hyatt found Collins again, this time for a 3-yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt was blocked, but the Bobcats led 30-13 with 13:59 remaining.
The Wolves took the ensuing kickoff and drove 65 yards in seven plays for a score. Roberson ran 25 yards for a touchdown.
The Bobcats end the regular season Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at East Central. Co-Lin hosts Southwest this Saturday.
