Herrington completes periodontology residency
Dr. John Eric Herrington recently completed post-doctoral training as a resident in periodontology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Ala.
Herrington was born and raised in Meridian and has returned to his hometown to establish a practice in periodontics which encompasses periodontal therapy, dental implants, cosmetic procedures and all procedures defined by the American Academy of Periodontology.
While completing his residency, Herrington was one of four recipients of the American Academy of Periodontolgy's National Students Scholarship Award.
During his specialty training, he received extensive education in implant replacement therapy, managing periodontal diseases and performing cosmetic periodontal plastic procedures. He received formal anesthesiology training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Department of Anesthesiology (Veterans Administration Hospital). He recently was named one of three national finalists for the coveted Kramer Award.
Herrington graduated magna cum laude from Millsaps College in Jackson and received a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He continued his education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, receiving a doctoral degree in dental medicine in June 2001.
He received numerous awards, including the Pierre Fauchard Award for Academic Excellence, AAP Award for Outstanding Achievements in periodontics, Leon Schneyer Memorial Award for highest scholastic achievement in the basic sciences and Alpha Omega Award given to the graduate with the highest scholastic average. He was inducted into the National Dental Honorary Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
Herrington was recognized at convocation ceremonies for graduating with the No. 1 ranking in his class and for establishing a new record for academic grade point average at the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Dentistry.
He is the son of Oscar and Jean Herrington of Collinsville and the grandson of May Brown of Meridian and the late Grover Espey, Nona Mary Herrington of Little Rock and the late O.M. Herrington Sr.
