Bobcats come up short

PHIL CAMPBELL - Should the Phil Campbell Bobcats fall short of the playoffs this season, they will probably look back at Friday's game with Lexington as the night when a potential postseason berth began to slip away.
Twice in the final six minutes, the Bobcats had the ball at the Lexington 11-yard line, trailing by seven points. Twice they were unable to put the ball in the end zone.
The Golden Bears held on defense and emerged with a 13-6 win that moved them into a fourth-place tie with both Phil Campbell and Colbert Heights in Class 2A, Region 8.
The top four teams in each region qualify for the playoffs. Phil Campbell's two remaining region games are at Red Bay next week and at Cherokee on October 29.
After Jimmy Springer scored from 1 yard out to give Lexington a 13-6 lead with 1:05 remaining in the third quarter, Phil Campbell (2-5, 2-3 Class 2A, Region 8) had two opportunities to tie the game.
The first was set up when Eric Glasgow blocked a Lexington punt and the Bobcats recovered at the Golden Bear 36-yard line.
Junior quarterback Randy Cochran sandwiched completions to Kevin Lacey and Mark Wells around an 8-yard run to set Phil Campbell up with a first-and-10 at the 11-yard line.
The drive stalled there and ended when Cochran was nearly sacked and threw incomplete on fourth down.
The Bobcats got one last chance after forcing Lexington (2-5, 2-3) to punt. Phil Campbell took over at the Golden Bear 35-yard line and moved to the 11 on three running plays and a 13-yard completion to Eric Glasgow.
The Bobcats' hopes were dashed when Chasley Smith picked off Cochran's third-down pass in the end zone.
