City schools observe Red Ribbon Week

By Staff
Jonathan Willis FCT Staff Writer
There will be lots of red ribbons hung around the Russellville city schools this week, but it won't be Christmas decorations.
The system will be observing Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 18-22. Red Ribbon Week serves as a reminder to students about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
There will be a series of activities at each school to highlight the week's events.
In addition to having red ribbons placed around the campus of each school, there will be contests and days designated to wear certain wardrobes.
The theme for this year's event is "Don't Monkey with Drugs" and on Wednesday students are asked to wear something with a monkey or other jungle animal on it.
On Tuesday, students at the two elementary schools and the middle school will be allowed to wear a cap on "Put a Cap on Drugs Day." On that day, high school students may wear their shirts inside out or backwards on "Inside Out or Backwards Day."
The middle school will have a bookmark contest and a creative writing contest in their English classes. On Wednesday, the science classes will be planting red tulip bulbs with a promise not to use drugs attached to them.
The highlight of the week's activities will conclude with a program for middle school and high school students on Oct. 21 at the high school auditorium. The program will be conducted again that evening at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public, but it is not recommended for younger children.
