Excellence in Education

Corey Wade Burt of Philadelphia and Linda Fay Hopson of Meridian have been awarded Community College Scholarships to attend the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Ala.
The awards are based on academic achievement and proven leadership potential.
Burt attended East Central Community College and plans to pursue a career in Physical Education. Hopson attended East Mississippi Community College and plans to pursue a career in Elementary Education.
Chantrell Atura Hampton of Meridian has been awarded an Academic Achievement Scholarship to attend the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Ala.
The award is based on academic achievement and proven leadership potential. Hampton is a graduate of Meridian High School and plans to pursue a career in engineering.
Clarkdale Attendance Center student Angel Ross of Enterprise was recently selected for membership into the National Honor Society of High School Scholars. The society invites students who have superior academic achievement and are among the top scholars in the nation.
Brandi Beeson of Meridian was named to the dean's list at William Carey College for the summer trimester. Dean's list scholars must have at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Victoria Bliss Savell and Artemio Pina have been chosen to receive the first Mattie D. Hart-Emma Donald Matinee Philharmonic Music Club Scholarships at Meridian Community College.
These $500 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation. The organization wanted to encourage students studying music and assist with the cost of their music supplies.
Savell is a freshman in the University Transfer Program. She graduated with highest honors from West Lauderdale High School. At MCC, she is a member of the Flute Choir, Wind ensemble, chorus, Dimensions and Community Band. She is studying music performance and ministry of music.
Pina is a 2002 graduate of Ed Couch-Elsa High School in Texas, where he performed with the marching band, concert symphonic band and drill and dance team. He is a member of the Flute Ensemble, Concert Band and chorus. He is pursuing a degree in music education. He would like to teach at the university level.
Jesse L. Bennett of Meridian has been chosen to receive the Glen Deweese Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $1,600 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Deweese who was a strong supporter of the college and served on the Foundation board for many years.
Bennett, 45, is a freshman in the University Transfer Program. She has spent the last 25 years rearing her family and working various jobs. She earned her GED in 1992.
After she graduates from MCC, she plans to pursue a degree in accounting.
