INTERLOCHEN, Mich. Colin Doherty, 16, of Meridian has been accepted into Interlochen Arts Academy, the nation's premier fine arts boarding school, for the 2004-2005 school year.
Doherty, the son of Sarah Springer and Tom Doherty, will study piano and college-prep academics at the academy.
Interlochen Arts Academy is the top fine arts boarding high school in the country, drawing young artists from 45 states and more than 20 other countries.
Widely recognized as a model teaching center and outstanding presenter of artistic talent and achievement, the nonprofit Interlochen Arts Academy offers high school students the chance to major in music, dance, theater, visual arts or creative writing while studying rigorous college-prep academics.
More than 95 percent of its graduates go on to the nation's most distinguished colleges and conservatories. Interlochen Center for the Arts, a leader in arts education since 1928, is located on a scenic 1,200-acre campus 16 miles southwest of Traverse City, Mich.
Shelley Scarbrough of Meridian has been selected to receive the Career Women of Meridian Scholarship for the fall semester at Meridian Community College.
This $250 award is funded through the MCC Foundation. This local organization is committed to furthering educational opportunities for young women entering business.
Scarbrough is a 2002 graduate of Meridian High School. She is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program with an emphasis in business and accounting.
The dean's list scholar was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for two-year college students. She plans to pursue degrees in business and accounting and then sit for the Certified Public Accounting exam.
Heather Richardson of Stonewall will receive the Jacob Toney Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $1,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by an endowment established by Rebekah Toney of Quitman. It was Toney's desire to honor her son's memory by helping a student from Clarke County attend college.
Richardson is a 2002 graduate of Quitman High School where she was a member of the Quitman High School Band, the Jazz Band, the school chorus, Madrigal Ensemble and the Sextet Ensemble.
This fall, she began her sophomore year in the Physical Therapy Assistant Program. A dean's list scholar, Richardson is a member of the MCC Chorus and the Health Occupation Students of America.
She plans to enter the workforce upon graduation in May 2005.
