Hales withdraws from school board race

Lauderdale County School Board member Robbie Hales withdrew on Tuesday from this fall's election for the District 2 school board seat leaving challenger Glenn E. Hall unopposed.
Hales' decided to to withdraw about 11⁄2 weeks after Sept. 3 qualifying deadline. She has been a member of the school board for six years, serving as president the last two years.
Hall, who automatically will win the school board seat, said Hales' decision came "as a big surprise. I look forward to serving on the school board and will do my best to serve all the people."
Lauderdale County School Superintendent David Little said he also was surprised by Hales' decision. Little wished Hales well.
During her six-year term, Hales said she accomplished a number of goals including reinstating algebra in middle school.
She also witnessed a lot of change.
Hales, who has known Hall several years, said she is sure he is competent for the job. She said she hopes he also will be bold.
