The Newton Theatre Company is ready to journey down the most famous Yellow Brick Road in entertainment history.
A cast of 42 has been in rehearsals for four months, preparing to stage "The Wizard of Oz" as the opening play of the company's new season.
That was when the play committee selected the more recognized version of the production as its season opener.
Playing the lead role of Dorothy is Marianna Breland of Forest. The Wicked Witch will be portrayed by Leigh Whittle of Newton.
Other key roles in the production are Mark Anthony Engram of Sebastopol as the Tinman; Aaron Vega as the Cowardly Lion; and Aaron's brother, Isaac, as the Scarecrow.
The Newton Theatre Company was established in 1990 and held its first performance at Clarke College. In June 1994, the company moved into the historic Roxy Theatre in downtown Newton.
At the 1939 Academy Awards, the movie received Best Song for "Over the Rainbow," and Best Original Score. Judy Garland won a special award for Outstanding Juvenile Performance.
Other upcoming plays this season for the Newton Theatre Company include "Little Women," "Forever Plaid," and a children's play that has not been determined but will be staged in March.
