Excellence in Education

Bethany Lynn Spidle has been selected to receive the Ann and John Johnson Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $1,200 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by an endowment established by the Johnson family in 1998. John Johnson retired from MCC as business manager after more than 23 years.
Spidle is a 2004 honor graduate of Clarkdale High School. She was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and served as president of the National Honor Society. She was a member of the varsity softball team and will play at the next level with the MCC Lady Eagles.
She is entering the University Transfer Program with a career goal to teach elementary education.
Marita Strickland of Quitman will receive the Margaret and Bill Smylie Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $1,200 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by an endowment begun by Margaret Smylie in 1996. It is designated for a student in the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
Strickland is a 1999 graduate of Quitman High School where she was a member of the Math Club, the Library Club and Health Occupation Students of America.
She was vice president of the Beta Club, a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She works at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center as a student nurse in medical surgery.
She will begin the third semester of the nursing program this fall. Her educational goal is to complete a bachelor's of science degree in nursing.
The Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson announced that Chris Fontan of Jackson has been awarded a full academic scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Dean Jim Rosenblatt said the scholarship was awarded for demonstrated superior academic performance. Fontan is a second year law student and participates in the Mississippi College Law Review.
He is the son of Chuck and Cheryl Fontan of Meridian. He is married to the former Amy Metz of Florence. He received his undergraduate degree in business administration from Mississippi College and is the former office manager for Dinnerguest Inc.
