wins over Pearl River

The Meridian Community College men's and women's soccer teams opened MACJC South Division play with a pair of dramatic victories over homestanding Pearl River Community College on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles (4-3, 1-0 South Division) posted a 1-0 win in overtime over the Lady Wildcats, and the Eagles (4-2. 1-0 in South Division) scored a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats.
Pearl River is the men's defending MACJC-Region 23 champions, while the Pearl River women are the defending MACJC South Division champions.
Emily Howard, a graduated of Clarkdale, netted the Lady Eagles' goal in the first overtime period, knocking a head ball into the net. MCC's Christi Dorough notched the assist on the game-winning goal.
Chad Brunson scored the first goal for MCC's men's team in the opening half, deflecting the ball into the goal in the game's 26th minute.
Traye Torrance netted the Eagles' second goal scoring on a corner kick at the 79-minute mark, and Travis Brown scored the game-winning goal with a head ball in the 83rd minute.
Ken Beningo and Chris St. John each scored for Pearl River, which entered the second half tied at one with MCC.

Wayne Co. 4
Southeast Lauderdale (13-3) tallied 13 hits en route to a two-run win over Wayne County on Saturday.
Jessica Rose, who went 2-for-3 with a double, drove in the winning run for the Lady Tigers, and Eli Bowen went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Heather Ward and Lucy Ruffin each notched two hits for Southeast, which continues it season against Morton at 7 p.m. Monday.

Neshoba Central 1
Philadelphia (10-6) overcame four errors to edge out Neshoba Central on Saturday.
Candice Griffin and Shelby Smith each went 2-for-3 for Philadelphia, which posted eight hits in the win.
Rebecca Watkins and Whitnee White each went 2-for-3 for Neshoba Central, which had six hits and two errors in the game.
Philadelphia continues its season against Lake at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the road.

Cleveland 3
Clarkdale posted a four-run win over Cleveland in the Lady Bulldogs' first game of the Clinton tournament on Saturday.
Ashley Bye paced Clarkdale's offense posting two hits with a double, and Laura Robinson and Sabrina Woodall each had two singles. Whitney Drachenberg recorded the pitching win.

Woodall notched two hits including a three-run homer for Clarkdale in the team's second win of the Clinton tournament.
Robinson, Kim Seale and Alyssa Bye each had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs, and Drachenberg picked up the win on the mound.

Warren Central edged out Clarkdale by one run in a six-inning game to give the Lady Bulldogs (16-2) their only loss of the Clinton tournament.
Alyssa Bye posted three hits for Clarkdale, and Jessie Clark notched a double.
Clarkdale continues its season against Newton County at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.

Chad Bryan rushed for 208 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns as Sumter Academy (1-2, 1-1) earned an AISA region victory against visiting Marion Military Institute.
Bryan scored on third-quarter runs of 3 and 5 yards, the latter giving the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. Bryan also connected with Chase Martin for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and made nine solo tackles and three assists on defense.

Choctaw Central 22
Stephan McCoy scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime as the
Cherokee Braves downed Choctaw Central 29-22 in the annual Battle of the
Nations game.
In overtime, the Braves got the ball first and scored on McCoy's 8-yard run.
A roughing the kicker call on the extra point pushed Choctaw's opening
overtime drive back to the 25-yard line and they never threatened.
John Davis led the Braves with 122 yards passing.
The Braves now lead the all-time series, 6-3.

Steven Motley scored on a 16-yard third quarter run to lift West Blocton to a narrow win.
Motley had 105 yards rushing yards in the game. He also had a 60-yard interception return and a 67-yard fumble return for the Tigers. Chris Creel scored the first West Blocton TD on a 14-yard run.
