HEIDELBERG Coach Larry McGill is looking for his younger players to step up and play this season as the Heidelberg High School Oilers gear up for their 2004 season opener at home Aug. 27 against Quitman.
The Oilers finished with a 6-4 record last season and made it to the third round of the state playoffs.
Heidelberg was eliminated 28-20 by the Seminary Bulldogs, who on to win the state 2A championship.
Heidelberg High has about 50 players on the roster. Some of the key players returning for the season will be senior quarterback Raphael Jones, tight end-defensive end Nathan May, and defensive back-split end Tommy Thompson. McGill, a former All-Big 8 performer during his playing days at Laurel High School, labeled Thompson as a potential Division 1-A prospect.
The Oilers has a good spring training which ended with a 22-22 tie in a spring game with Canton.
