PHILADELPHIA Services for Katherine Williams Trapp will be held today at 3 p.m. at McClain-Hayes Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedarlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Trapp, 87, of Philadelphia, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Highland Home in Ridgeland. She was born on May 22, 1917. She was the first of eight children born to Amzie and Nannie Mae Williams of Williamsville. She graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1934, and received an education degree in history from MSCW in 1938. She taught history at Newton High School before World War II. During World War II she worked at the family business, Williams Brothers. After that, she taught school at Demeer Public School and then Philadelphia High School, where she had the pleasure of teaching her sister, Gloria, and her brother, Charles. Most of her teaching career was at her beloved Pearl River High School, where she taught history. After getting a master's degree in school administration at MSU she served as principal of Pearl River High School. She told her son that although their abilities differed, all of her students were special. She encouraged her students to always do their best, to set goals for themselves and to study. As a teacher and later principal, she touched many lives. She is fondly remembered by her students. A former student from Newton High School sent her a Christmas card every year. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling with the band of "van ladies." She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School, Bible School and Bible study for many years. She was active in community and civic organizations. She served as president of the local chapter of the Business and Professional Woman's Club, the Philadelphia Woman's Club and on the board of the Mississippi Federation of Woman's Clubs. She helped to organize the Philadelphia Arts Council and a book club. She was active in the Neshoba County Library reading program. She also was a longtime member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Her lessons in life were, "trust in the Lord and love and enjoy family." Her brothers and sisters and their families were close. The sisters attended each niece's and nephew's wedding. A niece, to whom Katherine was particularly close, Sissy Mabus Patterson, said that her aunt Katherine taught her to "trust in God no matter the obstacle, and he will bring you through." At her recent 87th birthday, she relished being serenaded by her three great-grandchildren and two of her grandchildren. These were part of her legacy.
Survivors include her son, Frank Trapp and his wife, Belmont, of Jackson; grandchildren, Stephanie Trapp of Fairhope, Ala., Joshua Trapp of Fort Ruckers, Ala., Will Trapp of Jackson, Stacy Pair of New York, and Julia Pair Gainey of Gulfport; great-grandchildren, Maxwell James Trapp, Aliya Katherine Trapp and Katherine Gainey, with brother, James Hillman Gainey on the way; sisters, Yvette Robarson of Clarksdale, Johnne Mabus of Philadelphia, Mary Jane Lang of Pass Christian, Peggy Dees of Philadelphia and Gloria Emmons of Meridian; and a brother, Charles D.
