Track and field competitors from around the state will invade Meridian on Saturday, June 19 for the annual State Games of Mississippi.
The event, held at Meridian Community College, will feature many of the usual track and field events. The competition will begin at 8 a.m. with the junior meets.
Third-year commissioner Greg Stringer will be looking for the number of athletes to improve after a small turnout in 2003.
Stringer is in the ideal spot as commissioner because he is the assistant track and field coach at the University of Southern Mississippi. This day-long field event gives him a chance to look at what the state of Mississippi has to offer.
The track and field event will be adding an honorary commissioner in the form of Olympic Medalist Willye White.
The event will be broken up into many different age groups and the events for the 2004 track and field event at Meridian Community College: 100, 200, and 400 Meter Dash, Long Jump, High Jump, 800 and 1600 Meter Run, 4×100 Meter Relay, 4×400 Meter Relay, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus, 100 Meter Hurdle, Pole Vault, and 110 Meter Hurdle and 300 Meter Hurdles.
Athletes will be allowed four events max and relay team name and individual names of each member must be included on the entry form for the event. All running spikes for the track and field event can't exceed 1/4 inches and all USAT&F rules will apply for all events.
