Summers: Rodeo is lots of fun

Drew Summers hasn't been competing in rodeos as long as many of the contestants in the Mississippi/Alabama Challenge High School Rodeo taking place at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center this weekend.
That doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy the sport just as much.
Summers has a few other hobbies, but rodeo ranks tops on his list.
Summers competed in the team roping event here with Eric Williamson.
Summers hopes to rodeo in college one day.
Several cowboys and cowgirls had good times or scores in Saturday night's rodeo and earlier slack competition.
In goat tying, Candy Parkinson of Mississippi had a second-round best time of 10.570 seconds. Ashley Peavy of Alabama had a time of 12.833 seconds. Wren Wilson of Alabama had a time of 13.100 seconds and Casey Dickson of Alabama was clocked at 13.882 seconds.
In bull riding, Shane Escoe of Alabama had a score of 79. Justin Caylor of Alabama was the only other cowboy to stay on long enough and had a score of 57.
In breakaway roping, Candy Parkinson had the best effort of the second round with a time of 3.541 seconds. Crystal Foley of Alabama was next at 3.935 seconds followed by Mississippi's Sydney Bailey at 4.247 seconds and Jessie Conner at 4.748 seconds.
Mississippi's Bart Brunson had the best showing in calf roping with a time of 9.389 seconds. Luke Dufrene of Mississippi was second at 12.142 seconds. Third place belonged to Alabama's Jacob Beam at 12.299 seconds, while Alabama's Cody Prescott's 15.919 was good for fourth.
Riley Carpenter of Alabama had the best time in pole bending at 20.901 seconds. She was followed by Mississippi's Lane Cox at 21.237 seconds, Alabama's Leticia Lockhart at 21.376 seconds, and Candy Parkinson's 21.770.
Alabama's Jordan Thompson had the day's best time in steer wrestling at 5.249 seconds. Mississippi's David Bufkin was second at 5.407 seconds with Alabama's Blake Payton third at 5.456 seconds, and Alabama's Johnathan Varner fourth at 6.482 seconds.
In barrel racing, Riley Carpenter of Alabama had the best time, turning in a 15.611 second effort. Brady Ammons of Alabama was second at 15.690 seconds with Ashley Batte of Mississippi third at 15.707 seconds, and Alabama's Randa Dewees fourth with a time of 15.824 seconds.
In team roping, Cody Prescott and Colter Prescott had the top time of the round with a time of 10.091 seconds. In second place was Alabama's Cody Griffin and Lauren Hedrick at 11.313 seconds.
The lone saddle bronc score went to Alabama's Justin Caylor with a 64.
Mississippi had the top three times in girls cutting with Erika Johnson scoring 73, Candy Parkinson 72, and Morgan Adams 67.
In boys cutting, Mississippi again had the top three scores with Brad Bates getting a 72, Rowdy Lee a 71, and Lucas Guilbeau a 70. Jordan Thompson of Alabama was next with a 68.
The final round of the rodeo begins today at 1 p.m.
