ECCC soccer team adds nine

By By Marty Stamper
EMG sports assistant
DECATUR Kenneth Thompson faces an uphill battle every year just to put a soccer team together at East Central Community College.
Only three high schools in ECCC's five-county district compete in the sport, leaving a precious few seniors each year to choose from.
MACJC members can divide 12 scholarships among 18 players.
Thompson has signed five players for the 2004 team with four more indicating they will be walking on.
Heading up the newcomers is midfielder/forward Kyle Vowell of Neshoba Central.
Also signing from Neshoba Central are midfielder Austin Herrington and defensive player Zach Kilpatrick.
Also signing with ECCC is midfielder/defensive player Daniel Warren of Clarkdale.
Also signing is Diego Perez of Forest. He attended ECCC this past year, but did not play soccer.
Non-scholarship additions include wing Micah Lanier and midfielder/stopper Taylor Nichols, both from Newton County. Lanier also competed in cross country at Newton County, while Nichols also played football and baseball for the Cougars.
Other walk-ons are sweeper Trey Whitehead of Southeast Lauderdale and wing/forward Jason Lopez of Forest.
