Passion' expected to boost attendance at walk

Thousands of people of all races, ages and faiths are expected at today's annual Way of the Cross/Way of Peace walk.
While turnout is usually strong, this year organizers anticipate even greater attendance as a result of Mel Gibson's recently released film, "The Passion of The Christ."
The two churches introduced the walk locally in 1997.
The Good Friday event a two-mile journey that includes 13 stations, or stops, at downtown churches and other locations will take place rain or shine.
It will begin with a program at 11 a.m. on the west side of the Lauderdale County Courthouse. This will include gathering songs led by the St. John Missionary Baptist Church Choir. After a welcome by the Rev. Elvin Sunds, pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church, an opening prayer will be led by the Rev. Jimmy Johnson, pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
At 11:50 a.m., a new addition, "The Agony in the Garden," will be presented in the area left of the west side entrance, followed by Jesus' arrest and death sentence. Each of the 13 stops will feature music, readings and dramatic presentations.
