One of the smallest area contingents in recent years will be making its way to Jackson as the MHSAA State Basketball Tournament begins its annual two-week run in the Mississippi Coliseum today.
Only 10 area teams, seven girls and three boys, advanced to this year's state tournament.
The Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes, 27-6, get this year's event under way today at 1 p.m. when they take on Baldwyn, 28-5, in Class 2A action.
At 2:30 p.m., the 23-8 Heidelberg Oilers face West Tallahatchie, 25-10, in another Class 2A game.
Two Lauderdale County teams will see action in back-to-back games on Tuesday. The 33-3 Lady Tigers of Southeast Lauderdale play Independence, 29-7, at 1 p.m. with the 28-9 West Lauderdale boys taking on Senatobia, 21-14, at 2:30 p.m. in a pair of Class 3A contests.
Both Noxubee County teams hit the court on Wednesday in Class 4A play. The 23-12 Tigerettes square off with Northeast Jones, 29-3, at 1 p.m. with the 21-13 Tigers taking on McComb, 26-10, at 2:30 p.m.
On Thursday, Sebastopol's 28-4 Lady Bobcats tangle with East Oktibbeha, 28-6, at 1 p.m. in a Class 1A contest.
On Friday, the 34-2 Bay Springs Lady Bulldogs face the Philadelphia/Baldwyn winner at 6:30 p.m. in Class 2A.
If Heidelberg's boys get past West Tallahatchie, they would play at 8 p.m. Friday against Lumberton, 24-3.
Choctaw Central's 34-2 Lady Warriors will play the Rosa Fort (31-5)/North Pike (28-5) winner Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. in Class 3A. An added feature to that contest would be Prentiss and Al Jefferson playing the Port Gibson/Byhalia winner at 8 p.m.
The 27-6 Lady War Eagles of Wayne County are off until next Monday when they will face the Pontotoc (30-7)/Bay St. Louis (27-6) winner at 6:30 p.m. in Class 4A.
