Sumter County boys, girls grab pair of regional victories

The Sumter County boys and girls basketball teams certainly felt at home at the University of South Alabama on Wednesday.
The Wildcats made the trip to Mobile worth their time as they thumped Leeds 77-26 to earn a spot in the AHSAA Class 3A Southwest Regional finals at 2 p.m. Saturday against Francis Marion, a 47-46 winner over B.B. Comer.
Sumter County, now 28-2 on the season and ranked No. 1 in 3A, led 18-4 after one quarter of play and outscored Leeds 40-9 in the second half to cruise to the win.
The starting inside trio of Jamie Sturdivant, Marko Mitchell and Reaynundo Sturdivant were 15-of-21 from the floor for the Wildcats who shot and impressive 60 from the floor for the game as a team.
Reaynundo Sturdivant had 16 points to lead the winners, while Mitchell scored 15 and Jamie Sturdivant had 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. Tavoris Threatt led Lees (13-16) with nine points.

The Lady Wildcats, now 14-8, used a 20-point, 15-rebound effort from Felicia Drummond to reach Saturday's regional finals against T.R. Miller at 12:20 p.m. at the University of South Alabama. T.R. Miller defeated Tarrant 67-29.
Sumter County trailed 6-5 after on quarter, but outscored Indian Springs (15-7) 16-2 in the second quarter and 12-5 in the third to take control of the game.
Drummond was 9-of-15 from the floor for the Lady Wildcats, while Jessica Delaine scored 14 points for the winners.
Elizabeth Theibert led Indian Springs with 10 points.
