Good manners are the key to success

I know you have heard the expression, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."
This means the first impression someone has about you sticks in one's mind forever. That's why it is important to be polite to everyone you come in contact with.
When I think about making good first impressions I am reminded about the story of the lady who had an unpleasant encounter with a man on the elevator. It so happened that she was in the building to meet with the company president for a job interview. She was very embarrassed when the company president was the man from the elevator. You never know who a stranger may turn out to be.
There are several guidelines for good manners. Remember that a warm smile brightens everyone's day. Always speak when spoken to and treat people like you want to be treated. If someone is new to your school, make an effort to be friendly and make that person feel welcome. There is no feeling quiet like being new to a group. I am always grateful when people introduce themselves to me and make me feel included.
So what do you do when someone is rude to you? Always remember that everyone can have a bad day. Sometimes people don't mean to be rude, they just have their mind on something else. If someone says something rude, the best way to react is to be nice. People who are rude on purpose don't expect that reaction.
When meeting someone for the first time it is polite to say, "Nice to meet you." To help you remember the person's name you may repeat the name. For example I could say, "Nice to meet you George." If you are with friends and you see some that you know, introduce that person to your friends.
There are some things to remember about conversations. Listen while others talk and include everyone in the conversation. When talking to someone maintain good eye contact. Also, give everyone a chance to talk. My sister says that I never give her the opportunity to talk. I am trying to work on that one.
There are also some things you don't want to do. Don't interrupt while others are talking. Also be careful not the say something to hurt someone's feelings. The best way to avoid hurt feelings is to think before you speak.
