Lady Rebels fall to Tensas, 50-45

JACKSON The Lady Rebels of Heidelberg Academy couldn't overcome a slow start and a scrappy Tensas Academy team in the MPSA Class A State Tournament at University Christian School on Thursday.
The Lady Chiefs held off Heidelberg Academy to pick up a 50-45 victory to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.
In boys' action, Heidelberg fell to Rossville (Tenn.) Christian Academy 62-39. In the girls game, the Lady Rebels battled back from a bad first quarter, but couldn't pick up the win.
The Lady Chiefs came out with a 9-2 run to start the game led by a three-point play by Megan Baurhle. Tensas held a 13-6 lead after the first quarter.
Heidelberg slowly battled back in the second quarter to take the lead. A bucket by Courtney Thomas with 2:28 left in the second quarter gave the Lady Rebels a 20-19 lead.
The Lady Rebels were able to stretch the lead out to a five points on a three-pointer by Thomas, but Baurhle answered back with a three-pointer in the
final seconds to make the score 25-23 at half.
Tensas came out strong in the second half with a 6-0 run. Whitney Alford scored with 6:02 left in the third quarter to give the Lady Chiefs a 29-25 victory.
The Lady Rebels answered back with a strong surge to close out the third quarter. Heidelberg Academy tied the game 29-29 on a basket by Thomas. The Lady Rebels took the lead later in the half on a bucket by Jennifer Barnett but Tensas scored in the final seconds to take a 33-32 lead after three quarters.
Tensas hit a couple of free throws in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to stretch the lead and continued to make free throws down the stretch to hold a 45-39 lead with a 1:37 left to play. Barnett scored 17 points for Heidelberg while Thomas added 14.
Rossville (boys) 62

Rossville jumped out to an early lead and held off Heidelberg Academy in boys action in the MPSA Class A State Tournament.
Rossville hit four three-pointers in the first quarter to take a 16-7 lead. The Rebels continued to stretch the lead out and led 33-15 at half.
Heidelberg Academy began to battled back in the third quarter. Heidelberg scored the first seven points of the quarter to cut the lead down to 13 points.
The two teams traded baskets in the final minutes of the quarter and Rossville held a 38-25 lead at the end of the quarter.
Heidelberg continued to put pressure on Rossville in the fourth quarter. A basket by Ryan Yawn and a bucket from Dusty Bass cut the lead down to nine points.
The Rebels outscored Heidelberg 12-10 in the final four minutes of the game to take the 62-39 victory. Will Thames scored 13 points for HA.
and Bass added 11 in the loss.
