Veteran leadership highlights Lamar squad

By By Will Bardwell / staff writer
Feb. 16, 2004
With a losing season behind them and a wealth of talent returning, the Lamar Raiders are poised to rebound in 2004.
Lamar is coming off a 6-19 season in 2003, its first year in AAA the Mississippi Private School Association's top classification. Adams said the sudden rise in opponents' talent was too much to adjust to.
Carrying that experience is most of last year's squad. The Raiders have eight seniors and seven returning starters.
Leading the way is Lamar's catalyst from a year ago, senior Drew Moffett.
But even though standout David Haggard's status is questionable after suffering a broken leg during Lamar's basketball season finale, Adams is quick to point out that Moffett will not carry the load alone.
And while the Raiders are few in number, Adams said that may play into his team's hands.
If that happens, Adams said, Lamar could be one of its league's biggest surprises.
The Raiders open their season Feb. 24 at Newton County Academy.
